i wanted to write a book that would protect people because we all know a crash is coming and if you’re not in the market you’re still going to experience it if you’re not prepared for it because it affects the economy as a whole and every five years we have on average we have a bear market or a crash and it lasts a year and it drops 33 percent but every single one of those you don’t lose any money unless you sell it’s really important for americans to understand this because america is unique in two and a half centuries every crash is followed immediately by an explosion up in a bull market so you all remember 2008 remember the market you know dropped almost 50 percent from peak to trough if you’re aware of it but from march 9th what a day or two from now was the celebration of it it went up in the next 12 months 69 and it’s been going up ever since for 250 percent so you get really wealthy when those numbers change so what i want to do is free people from the fear not by enthusiasm or positive thinking but by facts the facts are there’s a correction every year you shouldn’t be surprised the market cracks last january is the worst opening in the history of the stock market and we had a record-breaking year people lost 2.

2 trillion if they sold but if they stayed they went nowhere so when you know that every single year there’s going to be a correction now correction by the way means it drops 10 up to 20 percent from the peak a bear market or crashes 20 or more but every year since 1900 for 116 years we’ve had a correction it’s like winter you’re not surprised winter comes some are long some are short but you know what’s coming you’ve even got a chapter in the book called winter is coming yes yes it’s my hbo special but but the reason i say that is if you know it’s coming we want to prepare so you’re protected but also for everyone listening everyone who’s joining us online think about this if you’re a millennial for example and you’ve got all this debt from college it’s so imbalanced right now and you think you’re never going to get free or you’re a baby boomer and you never got started you think it’s too late believe it or not the crash the next crash is the greatest opportunity in your life to leapfrog from where you are where you don’t want to be financially to where you want to be because everything goes on sale listen the ladies in this room if your favorite outfits or shoes are on sale for 50 off you’re pretty damn excited right well guys if i said to you what’s your favorite card and you said a ferrari and i said you get it for 50 off guys be out of their mind but when the stock market drops 50 it’s on sale most people freak out not warren buffett not people like that i interviewed a guy named howard marks he was investing a billion dollars a week in 2008 and nine when the market was through the floor now he’s worth a hundred billion dollars because he bought everything for pennies you gotta think of it this way when things are going really great what do people want for the price of their home or the price of their stock or their business it’s real value or more when it’s going up like crazy everybody wants more than it’s worth when it starts crashing what will people take for their car for their business for their stocks well they take anything they can get and so those opportunities are the greatest ones in your in your life and here’s what you got to know if you’re stressed by worrying about the market or the economy there’s a correction every year you’re going to be stressed forever you’re get 35 and you’re live to 85 you’ve got 50 more corrections to go through and you know a bear market comes every five years so you’re gonna have ten more bear markets in your life time to stop being stressed time to become unshakable which simply means you have a plan you know what’s going on you’re not fearful because you know how this works long term and you’re not going to be taken advantage of you’re going to take advantage of the environment and what what is the like value of risk for an entrepreneur like the the ability to take risk it’s everything it’s part of my dna you know it’s just like i’m constantly every day trying to challenge myself you know to push myself to take risk whether it’s in my personal life you know pushing myself to new environments trying new things and why meeting new people it helps me grow you know i grow as an individual every time i try to do something that scares me i just like and afterwards like i just it empowers me i feel you know i feel like i’ve learned something i’ve grown i’ve learned about a new culture learn about a new person i always feel like i can learn something new from someone no matter who they are you know so um and then with ideas like i you know i just love i’m not afraid to fail you know for me there’s nothing more powerful than creating something and if it’s going wrong like solving okay let’s pivot let’s figure out why it’s not working and continuing until you know we actually have built something that people you know see value in and has grown and when something does work the reward of like seeing people come together for one thing and everyone kind of believing in that mission and believing in that idea and believing in it it’s just like there’s nothing more rewarding to me that’s like it’s a it’s best moments of my life have been like when i’ve taken a big risk and i’ve seen it come to fruition and like it’s gone from this idea to people to like actual people like you know all making it reality something tangible seeing the emotion that it creates in different people and like it’s just awesome you know and then i don’t know i forget i think puts me to like the elite daily like the moment where me and my co-founders when we had that exit we didn’t plan it and we looked at each other in the eye and we’re like man like we fucking did it like forget about the money like there’s 200 people back in the office that are all happy if you can working on a common goal 80 million people that are reading this thing on a daily basis like remember the days it was just three folding chairs and we didn’t know if this thing was gonna really work and now you know it was to me that’s like it was the greatest thing in the world there are two currencies in the infinite game will and resources resources is money you need money to stay in the game but you need the will of the people as well and um the problem is is that when we organize to win that means the score is more important than the inspiration and motivation that people have to to give their blood sweat and tears and when we prioritize resources before will that’s a problem i’ve never met a ceo that doesn’t believe their people are important the problem is where on the priority list you know we’ve been to any number of presentations where they put their priorities on the wall you know number one growth number two shareholder value number three our customer number four our employees there it is see i do care about our people um and the reality is as social animals we wanna work for and we’re willing to give our blood sweat and tears to leaders who understand that the balance of those two essential currencies the balance of those two things is will has to come before resources and that doesn’t mean 90 10 when i talk about putting people before profit you know people freak out which is ridiculous you need fuel for the car to go money is fuel for the organization of course even if there’s a leaning it’s 5149 there has to be a slight leaning towards people because there will always be decisions that a company has to make in which those two cannot uh both be supplied and one will have to be sacrificed the question the question is which will you always prioritize um let me give you a hypothetical example to make my point two ceos the first ceo says our number one priority is growth and of course our people are important because if we take care of our people we will meet and exceed our financial goals second ceo says our number one priority is our people and if we take care of our people we will always meet and exceed our financial goals which one would you rather work for i mean it’s obvious right it’s obvious um so this is what it means to prioritize will of resources it has of course of course uh money matters um but the people matter more it’s true and when you get to that point in your life where you’re not cursing the things that come your way and blaming the things that come your way and particularly blaming it on somebody else and you hear it all the time she hurt my feelings how’s that possible how can anybody hurt your feelings your feelings come from your thoughts no one can hurt your feelings without your consent no one can make a fool of you without your consent no one can embarrass you without your consent these are choices that you have that come from the way that you think someone calls you a name hey stupid and you turn around i didn’t even tell anybody i was coming how did they know that all right and then you blame the person who called you a name instead of saying that’s just their opinion that’s just where they are that’s where they are on the path and it’s okay all of you are in relationships right everybody has a relationship of some kind or another in your relationship you have any problems any of you have relationship you don’t have any problems i’d like you to take this microphone i want to sit down and listen to you everybody in a relationship has problems okay right now when you say i’m in a relationship i got problems therefore there’s something wrong something’s really wrong all right now if you’re in a relationship and you have problems and something is wrong you got to call in a consultant right you got to call in somebody to help you with the problems you don’t want the problems to go on who are you going to call in you only got yourself that’s all you got you might get a therapist once in a while but they got worse problems than you do the only consultant who can help you with your problems is you and who is that consultant that you’re calling in we’ve already established that there’s something wrong with that person right something wrong so now you’re going to call in a disabled person to deal with your problems in your relationship right now this is a really sick approach to clearing your problems you got somebody says we got a problem you don’t talk to me and i told you and you came home with last week and this week i called you and you didn’t call and i was supposed to call you and then you didn’t do it and how can you do that now this is the consultant you’re calling excuse me would you come in and help us oh no i get up you’re not i didn’t come home that’s the person you got to deal with your problems all right now what you can do is you can change all of that around you can say i’m in a relationship we got problems there’s nothing wrong with that that’s the way things are you know my problem is that you are different than i am and you think differently than i do and you behave differently than i do and you smell different than i do and you have all of these attitudes over here that i don’t have nothing wrong with that that’s the way it is when two people get together in a relationship you don’t have two people becoming one if you do that then what you end up with are two half persons who wants a half a person in a relationship you always are single even if you’re married and for you know and involved in relationship you’re still always single you’re still always you your unique special perfect self that is not trying to love
