Identifying our VALUES and understanding how PAIN and PLEASURE are at the core of everything we do. When we take control of this, we can CREATE OUR OWN OPERATING SYSTEM that drives us forward, creating unstoppable momentum.
Any outcome is a good outcome and we can learn from it.
I am now in Maui for Colbert’s wedding and came straight across from Florida following Tony Robbins.
It’s really windy today so I just could not get the sound quality to work. Instead, I’m right here in this really cool grand kitchen. Which is totally relevant because it really gives me some great ideas for how we are developing our big, big, big kitchens in our co-living spaces as well.
I wanted to quickly do a debrief on Tony Robbin’s Date with Destiny.
Tony talks a lot about pain and pleasure being the core human drivers. So we will do things to get pleasure and so we have certain values that we drive towards and the outcome when we get those values is that we experience pleasure.
Examples of such things might be achieving success for some people or achieving happiness, right? And we’re driven towards those things. We also have another set of values which Tony calls the away from values and these are things which cause pain in our life.
So if we might have a feeling of failure or we might have a feeling of not being good enough and those are things which we will try and avoid because when we experience them they create pain.
Now, if you take a moment to sit down and just write down what are all the different things or values or emotions that in your life when you experience them give you pleasure and then do the same thing for all the emotions, the values, the things that when you experience them they give you pain.
But what is the definition of success? Most people when we write down our definition of success it tends to be like when I achieve $10 billion or when I exit my company or whatever it needs to be.
When we then look at the ways in which we fail we then might say well I didn’t get the outcome I was after or things didn’t quite go my way as I wanted them to. And when we look at them we start to realize that we have all these things that which would give us pleasure and the way in which we need to achieve them is so specific that they’ve become very hard to actually achieve.
So we have rules around each of these values and the rules are so strict that it makes it very hard for us to experience the pleasure.
We put these two things side by side pleasure is incredibly hard to experience pain is incredibly easy to experience. And again we remind ourselves that we never actually sat down and designed these things for ourselves and they just kind of went into us through osmosis of society.
One of the big, big, big powerful things that we did at Date with Destiny was pulling out our values that were already inside us, figuring out our rules and then when we had it all on paper it was like oh my god this is like a blueprint or an operating system that will just create pain and avoid pleasure.
The next step is to create our own values. How about we design our pleasure inducing values and make the rules for experiencing them to be incredibly easy to achieve.
And then on the pain side how about if we define our own pain away from values and make the rules in order to experience them incredibly hard to achieve. And once we bring these in and make them part of our actual personality and our operating system all of a sudden we find ourselves in a way where we’re propelled away from pain and towards pleasure. It’s super powerful.
Once we’ve created this new manifesto for living it then becomes about focusing on it. Daily practice, reviewing these until they start to become how we think by default. And my god it’s already happening. It’s already happening. When these things happen or when typical stimuli come up which previously would have made me feel a negative state I can feel the rewiring kicking in and I’m already thinking about things in a very, very different way.
That was probably the single most exciting, life-changing, mind rewiring thing that I got out of Date with Destiny. How to really rewire your blueprint. How to change your value system. How to upgrade the operating software in our minds to make it work for us and to propel us forward instead of working against us.
