On the Pipe 6: Pack it up
In freestyle,
anything is possible.
There’s no limit.
Just your imagination.
If I could get paid just to film
videos all
year and not ride contests…
…I’d way rather do that and
like,
express myself…
…do some gnarly shit on some
gnarly jumps because
you don’t really get to
do that everyday.
I’m a light these
hills on fire…
…you know, free riding is
where it all began.
Freestyle moto-cross is crazy
Worst fear in your mind to
get hurt again.
Reche Canyon and Taft and
Bakersfield,
biggest jumps I’ve ever hit.
I had the craziest gap I’ve
ever jumped over…
…pretty much the stakes were
as high as they get.
The positioning on the bike
when you hit the ramp,
the timing when you chop
your throttle…
…one little mistake and you’re
not coming
around and you’re crashing.
The interview.
We’re hanging out down here
Temecula, California at
‘Monster Tattoo’…
…this is where Daniel Reese
and
myself not only tattoo…
…but I display all my art work
when I’m
not riding dirt bikes…
…I’m usually at home
flinging paint around…
…and putting it on canvas for
people to check out.
The only thing that really keeps
me
sane when I’m hurt…
…is painting and consuming
myself in my artwork.
Earlier this year, you know, I
announced team
riders ‘The Mob Syndicate’…
…it’s new, it’s fresh.
I’ve been working with riders
for years and years…
…you know, you name it.
Most of the top guys, that
are in freestyle,
have learned a thing
or two from me.
It’s always been something that
I’ve done,
is help people out.
Syndicate, basically a group of
like minded individual that
are out to conquer.
One thing I do know is that I’m
better at
any of these guys coming up.
I can school em’…
…and take ’em free riding,
that’s my
time to shine right now.
I’m pretty confident, I’m going
to go out there…
…I’m a light these
hills on fire.
You know, free riding is
where it all began.
Nothing compares to going out to
a new riding area…
…and finding jumps.
And when we went up to
Cameron Arizona…
…we pulled up and right away,
where we parked, I’d be seeing
all these mud hills…
…and I could picture like,
dude, I
could jump that, no problem.
I’ve had my fair
share of injuries.
I’ve probably broken one or
two bones a year.
I had a pretty shitty
situation…
…I broke my femur,
shattered my elbow…
…and all l I could think about
was,
get me in an ambulance…
…and get me to a doctor to
shove
a rod in my femur.
I really thought like, dude I
don’t
think I’m riding X Games.
Felt like I had just pain
in my joints…
…I was miserable.
Then the next day I wake up and
I’m just like ‘whoa’…
…can’t believe it man, my body
feels like
it’s completely healed now.
And so now, you know, my
goals already yeah,
I can make X Games here in the
next couple weeks.
You know had a pretty
good career…
…got to travel
around the world…
..doing super cross and
pre freestyle…
…which was
expressing sessions.
One of the most important things
for anyone in life,
is to do what makes you happy.
It’s unbelievable the things
that I’ve gotten to
do because I ride dirt bikes.
Alright?
It’d be pretty cool for people
who are into bikes remember
me as an innovator..
…and always out there to
push the sport,
push the riders and be there
to help people out.
Brody Wilson from
Massachusetts…
…is a good dude that I’ve had
my
eyes on for a few years.
One of those dudes that will
ride super hard,
super committed.
My name’s Brody Wilson.
Welcome to my compound in
Templeton Massachusetts.
Me and my dad started building
out
here about 10 years ago.
It started off as a
motocross track
and slowly kinda turned into a
freestyle compound.
Right now it’s got five ramps…
…two fun boxes, a wall ride,
a foam pit…
…a bunch of dirt jumps.
It’s got pretty much
everything you could want
We bought a farm here…
…and we have 48 acres.
The part that the freestyle
compound is on,
takes up about five acres.
Actually I wanted Brody to be a
doctor or a lawyer
but instead we got a kid that
rides a
dirt bike for a living.
When he started, it was just
keep
making the jumps bigger,
make em bigger, make em bigger.
I would tell him there’s no
jumps that
big on a motocross track…
…but they just kept
getting bigger.
Yeah, there is free riding
on the east coast.
There’s a lot of sand pits and
quarries and stuff…
…that have a lot of big hills
and jumps
and they’re a lot of fun…
…that’s like the only free
riding I’d ever got
to do before going out west…
…and I think, you know,
it helped.
This past winter, I moved
out to California.
I ended up meeting a lot of
really
good riders out there.
In particular, Mike Metzger, he
took me all around.
Got us to Reche Canyon and Taft
and Bakersfield
and Ocotillo all these places.
I’ve never really had a chance
to ride any of
that stuff before this year…
…and ended up riding it and I
loved it,
it was awesome.
Biggest jumps I’ve ever hit.
Found ‘Fingerlake MX Park’…
…came out here for
a track day.
Bert Endicott the owner of
Fingerlake MX track…
…he was nice enough to let us
come
out for the last month…
…start pushing dirt.
We just went for it and that’s
what we came out with…
…these jumps and had a
fun session on it.
On 85 it’s pretty hard to
hit these jumps…
…because it’s just
six gear pins
so you don’t have to worry about
too fast or too slow…
…just pin it.
(inaudible)
There it is one
footed back flip.
I ended up going to Europe to
ride
for ‘Masters of Dirt’…
…there just wasn’t
enough runway…
…to complete the trick
in a tight arena.
For X-games I wanted to have two
fresh brand new bikes
but all I had money for was to
spend about a grand…
…on a couple of ratted
out duke bikes…
…that I got off
freaking Craigslist.
My bike that I had
built for me…
…when you rev it and
chop the throttle
it would stay at like half
or 3/4 throttle.
Broke the costal cartilage,
the cartilage that holds all
your ribs
together and my rib cage…
…and it severed my liver…
…and I dislocated my hip,
it sucked…
…but what you do you know?
Damn it!
Got worked really hard
at this trick…
…and I want people to realize
and see
the work I put into it.
I’m not the most
technical rider…
…but there’s two things that I
do have
and that’s big ass balls…
…and determination.
I said I was going to land a
front flip,
I didn’t…
…so I wanted to show people
and back up,
you know, my talk…
…and go land what I said I was
going to
set out and accomplish.
My Village Minerve, my city it’s
a old,
very old castle.
I did my first compound on the
wine house of my family.
I start 3 years ago and now it’s
very
good line with a full jump.
When I first opened, it’s not
only one in Europe…
…but I think it’s the best.
The ‘Mulisha’ is a group
of friends still.
My goal is to keep it core…
…and always keep it real.
You know the compound just
keeps getting bigger.
Super cross, freestyle, foam
pit, motocross track,
truck track it’s all here..
…so we have a platform of
building
these younger riders
and I want to keep
freestyle growing.
Through the AFMXA…
…through organizations
building in
freestyle motocross…
…so there’s a future for the
sport and for
the young kids coming up.
So Cam Sinclair had the
double back flip wired.
So he’s doing it a bunch of
times at X-Fighters…
…ends up under rotating,
crashing, major crash
Coma, near death crash.
His original goal was to go to
X-Games and win
a medal with that trick…
…and so here’s his
second chance.
He ends up winning
the gold medal
and like that moment is what
defines
freestyle motocross.
You know, some people said
he’s a little crazy…
…but when I got to meet him
and
hang out with him…
…I really thought he
was a great guy.
Josh Grant is a rider that we’ve
had our
eyes on for a long time.
Always supported him, Lusk, he
used to
always talk about Grant.
He’s been a great part of our
team
and Grant’s just like,
one of the most bad ass
riders on a dirt bike.
Hey, hey!
Communications, he’s too fast,
that 33’s
just entirely too fast,
I can’t catch him.
They know who runs this town.
J.G does.
Taka’s been out here ripping it.
The dude has a certain
talent and skill.
He’s like a gymnast on the bike.
Every trick he does is good.
Through connections and
everyone helping…
…we got him in X-Games so he
goes out, rips
best trick and wins a medal.
It was perfect.
Shows what hard work and taking
a
little chance will do.
Twitch is the best.
That guy is crazy.
That guy can wall ride, free
ride, every
sick jump he makes crazy
He makes it look like
a video game.
He just goes for it and then
tells me Oh ‘Taka
you should go’ I say ‘no’!
It’s not like I’m you!
In January, February and March,
I went to America…
…bought myself a 4 stroke for
the
tracks and the hills…
…and 2 stroke for freestyle.
Something new woke me up when I
was over there,
you know…
…there’s so many good
riders to ride with.
Deegan’s been cool, I’ve been
riding at his place.
Good sessions there.
Riding at Meadows,
Nate’s park…
…do some free riding in
Reche’s canyon
Kinda found back to my roots and
why I
really want to do this.
You know back 5 or 6 years ago
it was such a
big step to move to America…
…but I had to run away from
the winter in Norway
So I went down to Spain
to Torrevieja…
…which has the most sunny
days in Europe.
It’s a great place, you have the
beach here,
you can surf…
…it’s kinda the
California of Europe.
I bought a house down here
I rented a property in
Torrevieja…
…started to build.
At first I had 3 landings…
…and man I want to
make this bigger.
So I rented out more land
from that guy.
Now like 11 ramps out there,
about 7 landings.
Think about 25 different options
you
can do in the park…
…including the dirt kickers…
…fun boxes…
…quarter pipes…
…curved wall ride…
…foam pit…
…transfers…
I wanted to make it hard, I
wanted to
make it really technical.
Finally, I ended up with
probably the biggest
freestyle park in Europe.
You know I wanted to get some
good
friends of mine, good riders.
The first on the list was
the Pages brothers
I ride a lot with them.
And Torronteras came over from
Barcelona,
star of Spain…
…been for the last 20 years…
…you know, run his
Torronteras style
We got like 10 or 11 riders
that had just a blast.
The Pages brothers
are nut cases..
…but they do also have skill.
You know, I respect them for
what they do, they
have done some gnarly stuff…
…and more will come you know.
But they don’t care about if
there’s cameras around…
…or if they’re alone in the
frigging park
in France they do it anyway.
I think that’s cool.
How good is not too be the best
free
styler in the world.
It’s just having fun and
dream some new tricks
this is the most
important thing for us.
Welcome to my house. I moved in
here a
couple of years back…
…with the intention of making
it
a fully functioning
free style training facility…
…and my dream was to have
somewhere I could
ride at the house every day.
I mean I’ve moved mountains to
get what I’ve got.
I kinda stood here one day and
thought,
how I’m gonna do this?
How am I going to fit it all in?
And I realized I need a machine
to kinda help
keep the up keep on this.
So I bought myself a skid steer
and I love that thing
You know with the course, you
can really mix it up.
Everything you could
imagine is here.
A lot of the top riders
actually come out here
and struggle to get around here,
you know.
It’s a good course and you come
out here
and spend some time on it…
…you’ll eventually get over it
all and by the
time you get over it all…
…you really start to
become a better rider.
Come here! Come here!
Woooooo!
2, 1, whoa !
4, 3, 2, 1, whoa!
If Josh beats me in this next
game of ping pong…
I will put somewhere small on
the box cover on
the box of ‘On the pipe 6’…
…’J.G is the ping pong champ’.
(Cheers) What! You’re not
winning it Josh!
Yes, yes!
