I MADE MY MARK – Tony Robbins, Simon Sinek, Jay Shetty
whenever people fail to achieve their goals 99.9 of the time you ask them why they’ll tell you it’s because of a lack of resources that’s what all these things are i didn’t have the support right i didn’t have the money we didn’t have the time we didn’t have this we have that there’s a resource that people believe is missing and that resource belief structure then keeps people from ever being able to really lead because what leaders do is they find a way to maximize whatever resources they have how little as they may be and they don’t believe in limited resources everything you people have told me i didn’t have the technology i didn’t have the right contacts i didn’t have the time i didn’t have money everything you’ve told me i didn’t have enough supreme court justices those are resources and so you’re telling me i failed because i didn’t have the resources and i’m here to tell you what you already know resources are never the problem it’s a lack of resourcefulness is why you failed because the ultimate resources are emotional states i’ll give you an example let’s take a business example to start with in 1974 a guy named sam walton had built his little company up he came with an idea he started with twenty thousand dollars and i think 1962 if i remember right but by 1974 within 12 years he had 78 stores and you know how he did it in the middle of the night he’d drive across border and he’d go and study other people’s stores he’d buy everything as cheap as he could in the middle of the night he’d go to the people’s stores whatever was working he figured out success leaves clues he came back and did it in his store whatever was working in any store in any competitor anywhere he could do it he did it so he figured how to maximize the little resources he had his 20 000 built 78 stores and if you read any of the people following him the company gone public in that year they were all saying this is it he’s maximized his resources i mean he only has so much money there’s only so many cities that are going to appeal to this discounting mentality right this is it this is all he can do and the word on wall street was sell now what’s interesting is at that time you look at sears and kmart and they were gargantuan companies weren’t they 40 50 times 100 times his size or more probably and at that time they were the leaders and they knew what’s going to happen but the things changed yes or no did he suddenly get massive amounts of capital no here’s what they didn’t understand sam walton now or the walton organization walmart is the most successful retailing operation on earth and when you talk about bill gates being the richest man in the world that’s only true because sam’s fortune is divided up amongst a bunch of different family members you put them together they dwarf bill gates sam walton did this how did he do it what people underestimated is that this guy could go to 4 000 400 stores do 250 billion where’s kmart today and they’ve been shrinking all them and shrinking and he’s the dominant force on earth if you’re creative enough can you find the answer yes or no if you’re determined enough can you find the breakthrough yes or no if you’re passionate loving enough can you get someone to help you yes or no if there’s no way that you’re committed can you find the money even if you don’t have it yes or no so i said creativity decisiveness passion honesty sincerity love these are the ultimate human resources and when you engage these resources you can get any other resource on earth and i said so you told me all the resources you’re missing and you hypnotize yourself into believing that you don’t have what you want because you don’t have the resources when the most successful people in history had no resources but they were incredibly resourceful so they got the resources resourcefulness is the ultimate resource and if you don’t have what you want stop telling yourself the story because you don’t have the money you know the time that’s it’s because you haven’t committed yourself where you would burn your boats if you want to take the island burn your boats and you will take the outing because people when they’re gonna either die or succeed tend to succeed but most of us give ourselves a way out and that’s why we don’t have what we want here’s the thing he understood resources are interesting but the ultimate resources are the feelings of emotion that make you resourceful think of it this way resourcefulness is the ultimate resource what do i mean what are the emotions that make all this possible what’s the fuel that takes an idea from being in your head where you intellectually know what to do how many had an idea for example was a great idea you’re excited about it and then you didn’t do anything one day there you saw it on the shelf you saw it somewhere someone stole your idea how many had this happened say i the only difference between you and that person was not that they had more resources they were more resourceful how many of you have a crazy dream or a crazy goal i want you to write out in the comments section what is your crazy dream the dream that keeps you up at night is the real dream you should be chasing but to chase that dream to find that dream to make that dream a reality you need a strategy right a dream without a plan is just a wish tony robbins said that right a dream without a plan is just a wish right without a strategy without a guiding philosophy without guiding principles without actually creating a clear plan i used to have this economics teacher and i want you to think back to school as well maybe you had one i remember this economics teacher he walked in to the classroom and the first thing that he wrote on the board he didn’t even tell us his name we didn’t even know who he was and he turned up he went inside the classroom and he wrote on the board he said failing to prepare is preparing to fail and all of us just burst out laughing this guy hadn’t even told us his name yet but on the board he wrote failing to prepare is preparing to fail and now when i look back at that and as i grew up and hopefully became a bit more mature than i was in high school i remember thinking about that statement and thinking how true is that that when you’re not prepared for something you miss out on unbelievable opportunities now i’m not saying good things don’t happen spontaneously sometimes things happen by chance randomly etc with a reason but when you’re prepared you can capitalize on things in a huge huge way vision here’s the here’s a thing that’s always boggled my mind right why is it on balance on balance not always but on balance why is it that small companies tend to be more innovative than big companies right small companies that are under resourced can’t necessarily get the best and brightest they’re going to go out of business any day and yet there’s they come with brilliant ideas and big companies full of resources full of amazing people by the little companies that come up with the good ideas that’s usually how big companies innovate they buy the smaller ones right um why is that why is it that the most resource companies tend not and i think it’s a question of reality and what i mean by that is small companies their vision is is more distant than their grasp right they have delusions of grandeur we’re going to change the world change industries reinvent this reinvent that we have no money and no people but so what the point is is the grasp is shorter than the vision and i think what happens is as companies get bigger and bigger and bigger with more and more resources what they start to do is one of two things either their their visions become well within their grasp and they don’t readjust the vision or they actually bring the vision back to put within their grasps right make things very achievable difficult but achievable for vision to truly be vision it should feel unachievable when a small business gets together and says here’s our vision everybody goes like this all right how are we going to do that in big business we see here’s a vision every goes all right yeah no got it we’ll do a back plan and i i firmly believe that innovation is born out of the struggle innovation is born out of the the resourcefulness that you’re forced to figure out because literally the vision is way beyond your grasp regardless of how many resources you have it should always feel overwhelming and impossible take a group of people with tons of resources to give them a vision they’re gonna go you
