mae Jemison was born in DeCoteau alabama
in 1956 but was raised on the south side
of chicago she’s the youngest of three
children she wasn’t from a wealthy
family her father Charlie was a
maintenance worker and her mother
Dorothy was a schoolteacher it was
evident from an early age that Mae had a
huge appetite for learning she entered
Stanford University in 1973 on a
scholarship at the ripe age of 16 she
earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
chemical engineering in 1977 while also
fulfilling the requirement for a
bachelor’s degree in African American
Studies also at a young age
Mae had the intention of making a
difference she dreamed of traveling to
outer space and assumed that she willed
due to her quest for learning Mae went
further to study medicine at Cornell
University she graduated from Cornell
University Medical School in 1981 after
medical school Jamison spent
two-and-a-half years as a Peace Corps
medical officer in Sierra Leone and
Liberia in West Africa when she returned
to the u.s. in 1985 she went to work as
a general practitioner in Los Angeles
she also took graduate classes in
engineering in hopes of fulfilling her
lifelong dream of traveling to outer
space even though many people questioned
her interest in science she persevered
and followed her passion may apply to
the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration NASA in 1986 but
application was rejected due to the
space shuttle Challenger disaster in
1987 after a first application was
rejected Jamison eventually became one
of the 15 astronaut candidates chosen
out of 2,000 applicants her inspiration
for joining NASA was an african-american
character on Star Trek named lieutenant
Uhura mae finished her training as a
NASA mission specialist in 1988 and
ultimately became the first woman of
color in space in 1992 when she blasts
into orbits above the Space Shuttle
Endeavor a dream came true
even though she had no role model in
NASA Jemison said even as a child she
was convinced she would travel to space
however may story didn’t stop at being
an astronaut she reinvented herself into
a successful businesswoman in March 1993
after her dream had been fulfilled may
resign from NASA but soon after leaving
the space program she formed the jamison
group in corporate which focuses on
beneficial integration of science and
technology into everyday life one of the
few lessons to learn from May is the
thing beat and walk harder success can
be achieved by anyone as long as you
listen to your head and heart
despite the skeptics self-doubt and
obstacles in your way it’s about
thinking big and working harder you can
choose to sit on the sidelines as a
casual observer of the game of life or
you can jump in with both feet and
courageously fly with a fundamental
element of success as Pablo Picasso once
said action is the foundation key to all
success imagine where may would be if
she did not take action towards her
dreams certainly not a successful woman
we know today stop talking stop thinking
stop planning start doing if it feels
impossible because she might feel good
that’s the point what Disney said
believe in your dreams no matter how
impossible they seem if you want to
achieve something great you need to take
daily actions no matter how little or
small your progress same don’t stand
still mae Jemison said figure out what
your purpose is in life what you really
and truly want to do with your time and
life then be willing to sacrifice
everything to achieve it that’s the word
most people hate sacrifice you have to
love that word and be willing to endure
the pain that comes with sacrifices on
your way to success they willing to
sacrifice anything to achieve your dream
